Our Clinical Services

Individual Counseling

Need support? You're not alone. Life certainly doesn't always go as planned.

Whether you're struggling with managing your emotions, relationships, career, grief/loss, or trauma; our therapists are here to help.  We're committed to providing a non-judgmental and anti-oppressive space for our clients to connect with their own insight and enact the lasting change(s) you seek to create.

Curious about our values? We think it's important to know what your therapist stands for, and that's why we're transparent about this from the start. After all, you're asked to open up with your therapist about the most vulnerable parts of yourself. If you care about your therapist's values, that just means you care about protecting yourself; and we care about protecting you, too. Check out our Mission & Values page to learn more.

Resilience Counseling LLC works with adults of all ages; select therapists also work with adolescents aged 12-17 yrs. old. Check out our team to find a good fit.

Relationship Counseling

Whether you're a couple, family, or polyamorous with multiple partners; if you're having relationship challenges, we're here to help.

As a sex positive practice, our relationship therapists are experienced with supporting those in Queer relationships, navigating open and/or poly relationships, and kink/BDSM relationships.  All are welcome here, and you won't need to explain to your therapists what having a "meta" means. We know your language and some of us relate to others this way, too. Refreshingly normalized, you can just get right into what your relationship challenges are with your therapist; without needing to educate the person you're paying to help you. We are eager to support those who have the courage to bravely step outside of the heteronormative expectations society places on us all.

Surgery Letters:

Supporting Access to Identity Affirming Healthcare

The medical industrial complex doesn't make it easy being trans or GNC. The gatekeeping around gender affirming care is pretty intense. We're doing what we can to make it a little easier, and to support folks who are currently fighting their way through a system that wasn't designed for them.

Our entire clinical team will receive formal training by March 2023 on authoring letters for all types of surgeries for trans folks: From FFS, Body Contouring, Top Surgeries to Bottom Surgeries. We've got it all covered.

We get it- cisgender folks get gender affirming surgery all the time, like when a cis-woman gets breast implants, and they've never needed approval letters. We know the system is full of barriers for the trans community: That's exactly why we're getting educated on how we can best support folks obtain access to life-saving medical care.

We are also a growing team of Art Therapists!

By March 2023, there will be Four Art Therapists at the practice once our newest hire is onboarded.

Look out for Art Therapy art on our Instagram feed this spring/summer 2023!

Art Therapy

Who is an Art Therapist?

  • Art Therapists can be identified by their degree: MA Art Therapy (MAAT) or MA Art Therapy & Counseling (MAATC). Anyone who labels themselves professionally as an Art Therapist is ethically required to have a master's degree in Art Therapy. Unfortunately this isn't always understood even within our own field in mental health counseling. When a therapists says to offer Art Therapy- always check their credentials to make sure that's really what they're offering.
  • Art Therapists can also be identified through Art Therapy specific licensure, ATR or ATR-BC: After completing a master's level Art Therapy degree program, Art Therapist are eligible for licensure after completing a specific amount of post-grad hours and formal art therapy supervision. Art Therapy licenses are the ATR (Registered Art Therapist) or ATR-BC (Registered Art Therapist, Board-Certified).

What is Art Therapy?

  • There is no one way to practice Art Therapy. We primarily draw from modalities used in talk therapy and apply art-making to them, in a way that's very specific to the client. For example, we can integrate art-making into ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) or Narrative Therapy; or even practice a type of therapy exclusively through art-making. This is why our degree and training in specifically Art Therapy is important.

  • Just like different artists, Art Therapists use a wide range of art materials. The art materials we use depends on your needs and preferences as the client, the Art Therapist you're working with, and the art materials you both have available.

  • Here's one thing we don't do, though: Art Therapists do not tell you what your art means! That is for you, and one you, to decide. You're the one who made it. Sometimes we'll ask questions or connect dots when talking about your art in session with you, but we don't "read" your artwork for hidden meanings (it's a common misconception).

But what about other therapists who use art in therapy?

Can a therapist with a traditional counseling or social work degree offer Art Therapy?

No; only someone with a master's level degree in Art Therapy can offer or label their professional services as Art Therapy.

  • Traditionally trained counselors/therapists can use art in therapy as long as they understand their own boundaries and limitations and aren't misrepresenting themselves. They should also consult with an Art Therapist to make sure they understand what these boundaries, how they stay within them, and for general info on best practices about using art in clinical services.
  • There is merely a distinguishing factor between a licensed counselor or social worker using art in therapy, and the practice of Art Therapy. Art Therapists had their entire graduate education and internships/early clinical training focused on how either integrate art-making into the therapy process, or to have art-making become the therapy itself. It can be a pretty intense educational program; because you have to learn the counseling theory first, and then you have to learn how to practice the theory through art-making.
  • By default, this training and experience gives an Art Therapist a much deeper understanding on this process and how to facilitate it than an individual (or artist) with a traditional counseling or social work degree.
  • This is the same reason why only folks with a master's degree in Art Therapy are eligible for ATR or ATR-BC licensure. It's just not possible to go through a brief training or workshop, and learn what is taught over the course of 2 years in a master's level Art Therapy degree program.

Resilience Counseling LLC is a hybrid telehealth and in-person practice.

As a result of COVID-19, the state of Illinois signed into law that health insurance is mandated to cover telehealth (video sessions & appointments) the same as in-person.  All providers at Resilience Counseling LLC offer (HIPAA-compliant) video appointments.

Most clinicians also offer in-person appointments.  Our office is located within the loop in downtown Chicago, and is easily accessible by car or public transportation.  To reduce the risk associated with in-person sessions, we have enhanced cleaning protocols and use HEPA air purifiers throughout the space.

COVID-19 Statement:  Resilience Counseling LLC requires that its clinicians are fully vaccinated in order to facilitate in-person sessions. For your safety, we highly encourage unvaccinated clients to utilize telehealth services at this time.

Ready to get started?

The first step starts with booking a phone consultation with the provider of your choosing.  Intake appointments are scheduled directly with the therapist during or after the phone consultation.

Consultations are 5-15 minutes long. are provided over the phone, and are free of charge. This time is for both you and the provider to determine whether you'd be a good fit to work together in order to get what you want from therapy.

If you have any questions, this is definitely your time to ask!

You can seamlessly book a consultation for free on our website from the Our Team webpage.  We look forward to connecting with you.
